The Barkley Marathons: A Conquest Completed by Three Determined Competitors

An Unforgettable Journey

By Gene Thorp and Larry Nista The Washington Post

The Barkley Marathons, notorious for its extreme difficulty and unpredictable nature, has been conquered once again. Three relentless individuals have emerged victorious from this grueling challenge, showcasing their indomitable spirit and unwavering determination.

A Trail of Torment

The Barkley, held in the rugged wilderness of Frozen Head State Park in Tennessee, consists of five 20-mile loops. Participants have a limited time to complete each loop, facing treacherous terrain, brutal elevation changes, and minimal aid. Only a handful of runners have ever successfully navigated the entire course within the allotted time frame.

The Triumphant Trio

This year, three remarkable competitors prevailed over the unforgiving conditions. John Kelly, a seasoned ultramarathon runner from Pennsylvania, emerged as the first finisher after enduring 53 hours of relentless effort. Completing the dreaded "Fun Run" (a shortened version of the race), Gary Robbins of Canada and Brett Maune of California also etched their names into the annals of Barkley lore.

Their journey was one of endurance, resilience, and unwavering determination. They braved the unforgiving elements, navigated treacherous trails, and overcame countless obstacles. Their triumph is a testament to their exceptional physical and mental fortitude.
